“Simón y Las Reglas is named for the Havana neighborhood bandleader Simon Thomas George haunted for four months while studying abroad in Cuba in late 2012, and where he fell in love with Cuban music. As he’s dreamed ever since, George has finally put together a combo stateside to continue exploring the Cuban sound. He is joined by a seasoned trio of Asheville players: Tyler Householder and Micah Thomas on percussion, and Michael Libramento on bass. Las Reglas translates to “The Rules,” but don’t be cowed by a literal translation—George isn’t sweating authenticity and this group calls back to the original spirit of the descarga, the organic melting-pot Afro-Cuban jam.”
